Alright my fellow Opponauts, I need your input!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I am planning to take advantage of some of the crazy good deals on performance summer tires on TireRack right now. I need a tire that will function well as both a daily driven tire and help me be more competitive in autox stock street class. In time I will get a set of dedicated track wheels with autox only rubber, but for the time being I'll need something that can pull double duty. In the Toyobaru world everyone seems to agree that Pilot Super Sports (currently $540, $470 after rebate on TR) are the best for this purpose. I want to hear your opinions and suggestions though!

Pilot Super Sports are the best way to go, from all the reviews I've read.

Pilot Super Sports. My buddy just put them on his BRZ. I drove it yesterday, they are really really fantastic. Trust me, go with PSS.

Bridgestone RE-11A. Better grip than the MPSS but also lower life(a litte bit). I would say you would get about 15 to 20k out of them. People on Z forums have gotten about 15000 on their 370zs which are heavier. MPSS are great for the road, but on autocross and track they aren't the best, extreme performance tires FTW!!! Also the RE-11As, work well in cooler temps than other Extreme performance tires, and are great in the rain. Oh and they are cheaper. MPSS run about 800 bucks mounted in the size I want. These are only 600, mounted as well(both are at costco!)

I have done my research on these tires and they are what I am getting!

I love my Direzzas on my Miata. Made me so confident on a FLOODED autocross that I spun out just from getting so hard on the throttle in a tight turn. First thing you may think is that I spun out so they're bad but the truth is they were just so confidence inspiring in the rain I was pushing way too hard.

MPSS suck for autocross/track. Sidewalls are too soft and they heat up/get greasy super fast. They last super long on the street but easily disintegrate when you put your car to actual use on the track.

Get Yokohama AD08R or something else in the EHP range. 90% of MPSS reviews are written by cars & coffee drivers.

PSS PSS PSS PSS PSS PSS PSS PSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(edited for more info) I have them on my Volt - it's like a whole new car. Offramps were never so much fun. As far as road manners and comfort go, the sidewalls are stiffer than a cheap all season, but nothing awful. Ride is excellent, handling is totally amazing. Gas milage is not affected at all.

I've never been so happy with a tire before.

Interesting. I've heard the PSS are also fantastic in the rain. Most of my driving will be road, but I do plan on doing a full season of SCCA solo in the stock street class.

The PSS is a good choice.

If you want something less expensive, consider the Dunlop Sport Maxx GT or Falken Azenis RT615K.

But really, any max or extreme performance summer would be a good dual-purpose tire.

PSS are amazing in the rain too. Again better than anything else I've driven.

The Super Sports are probably better in the wet, but that is cause they have a higher tread wear rating. I would look up reviews on the RE-11As. They have really nice road manners, and are great in the wet. They will also outperform the MPSS. Really it is up to you. I plan to do a lot of autocrossing, so a grippier tire is a must for me!

The RE-11As are sounding pretty good, I'm definitely going to research them more. Only $20 more than the PSS too. 15-20k miles isn't that bad for me, especially since I don't drive a ton. My commute to work is only 6 miles each way, so that would last me for a fair amount of time. I can justify spending $580 every year or so for some stickier rubber. Plus, once I have track wheels my daily rubber won't need to be quite so nice. If it will make me more competitive for my first full season of autox, I think the RE-11As might be the winners.

I like these:

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

I have them on my R32. They are great in rainy climates.

I had PSS on my FR-S and didn't like them, lots of temperature instability.

Now I'm on Advan AD08s.

For stock class they have to have a UTQG off 200 or higher.

Ahem. You're comparing an LRR tire to a performance summer tire...

OF COURSE IT WILL BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

I would definitely put them up there to look at. Do a bit of research though, don't just take my word for it. they might be perfect for me, but the worst thing for you!

Why the Advans over ZII or something similar? I have heard the AD08s don't have the highest grip for Extreme performance tire.

Any good high performance summer tire will do fine at the occasional autocross/track day

Haven't personally tried the ZII (though they are next on my list) but the AD08s are incredibly predictable, and have (so I hear) the best dry grip of any extreme performance summer tire.

They also have the highest tread width for any given size and a relatively small overall diameter to help with acceleration.

I've driven on plenty of different tires. And yes, on the Volt specifically it's one extreme to the other... Although the OE tires on the Volt actually have pretty stiff sidewalls to handle the additional weight, they were overall low in the grip department. But I've always driven heavy cars and had a few different performance tires. Nothing I've ever run grips like the PSSs. It just happened with luck that I have the Volt when I stumbled across a great deal on a set. I would recommend for anyone who wants the grip and has winter tires for the other season.

Pilot Super Sports...I have 10k road miles and 50+ laps of the 'Ring on mine. Still have quite a bit of meat left on them. They aren't a true track tire but for DD and track there isn't really a better deal right now.
